If you run a small business, chances are you're spinning multiple plates—from operations and sales to customer service and beyond. Marketing often ends up being reactive or inconsistent. But to truly grow, you need to take a step back and assess: what's working, what isn’t, and where you're losing momentum.

That’s where a marketing audit comes in. Think of it as a clear, structured snapshot of your efforts, helping you make smarter, data-informed decisions. Below is a checklist I’ve pulled together specifically for small business owners who want clarity and control over their marketing strategy.

Brand Clarity Check

  • Is your value proposition clear and easy to understand?

  • Do your logo, tagline, and visuals align across all channels?

  • Is your brand voice consistent in your emails, social content, and website?

  • Are you telling a story that connects with your ideal audience?

Tip: Ask three customers to describe your business in one sentence. If you get three different answers, your messaging needs refinement.

Website & SEO Review

  • Is your website mobile-friendly and fast to load?

  • Do your landing pages have clear calls to action?

  • Are you ranking for relevant keywords your audience is searching?

  • Have you updated meta titles, image tags, and internal links recently?

Tip: Use tools like Google Search Console to see where you’re ranking—and where the gaps are.

Social Media Presence

  • Are you active on platforms where your audience actually spends time?

  • Are you sharing a mix of content—educational, engaging, and promotional?

  • Are you tracking metrics like reach, comments, and shares?

  • Is your profile branding up to date across each platform?

Tip: Better to do one or two platforms well than to spread yourself thin across five.

Content Marketing Assessment

  • Do you have a content calendar, or are you posting ad hoc?

  • Are your blog posts or articles bringing in traffic or leads?

  • Are you repurposing high-performing content across other channels?

  • Are you reviewing performance in Google Analytics or another tool?

Tip: Identify your top-performing content and build on that. There's no need to reinvent the wheel.

Email Marketing Effectiveness

  • Are you segmenting your list based on user behavior or interests?

  • Are you tracking open rates, click-throughs, and unsubscribes?

  • Are you using automation for onboarding, lead nurturing, or retention?

  • Is your list clean and up to date?

Tip: Small changes—like subject lines or button placement—can dramatically improve performance.

Paid Ads & Campaigns

  • Are you clear on your cost per lead or return on ad spend?

  • Are your ads tailored to the audience and platform?

  • Do your landing pages match the messaging in your ads?

  • Are you testing creative, targeting, and offers regularly?

Tip: Don’t overlook local or niche ad campaigns—especially if you're targeting a specific geographic area.

Competitor & Market Research

  • Have you reviewed your top three competitors recently?

  • Are there emerging trends or tools you should be aware of?

  • Are your pricing, offers, or positioning still competitive?

Tip: Take 30 minutes once a quarter to audit your competitors’ websites and marketing.

Customer Feedback Loop

  • Are you asking for feedback regularly via reviews or surveys?

  • Are you monitoring mentions or reviews online and responding quickly?

  • Do you have testimonials or case studies that you’re actively sharing?

  • Are you using customer input to inform your marketing or offers?

Tip: Your existing customers are your best marketers—make it easy for them to share their experiences.
